Lake Como Wedding Venue Spotlight: Mandello Del Lario Resort Wedding Photography

When planning a destination wedding in Italy, couples dream of that perfect combination: breathtaking natural beauty, intimate luxury, and a venue that feels exclusively theirs. Villa Lario Resort Mandello delivers all three—and then some. I recently had the privilege of photographing an elegant October wedding at this stunning Lake Como venue, and I’m excited to share why this hidden gem has quickly become one of my favorite places to capture love stories in Northern Italy.
Mandello del Lario on the sunniest eastern shore of Lake Como, Villa Lario Resort is a luxury boutique hotel that strikes the perfect balance between grandeur and intimacy. Unlike some of the larger, more tourist-heavy venues on the lake, this early 20th-century villa offers something truly special: the ability to book the entire property for your celebration.
With only nine luxury suites, Villa Lario Resort is ideally sized for intimate weddings and small celebrations. The wedding I photographed in October hosted fewer than 100 guests, but the venue could comfortably accommodate that number while still maintaining an exclusive, personal atmosphere. For couples seeking a genuine elopement experience or an intimate gathering with their closest loved ones, this is perfection.

One of Villa Lario Resort’s greatest advantages is its strategic location. Situated perfectly between the charming villages of Varenna and Lecco, the resort offers guests easy access to explore the region while maintaining a peaceful, secluded setting away from the bustling tourist crowds. The surrounding area is rich with local restaurants, shops, and Lake Como attractions, yet the villa itself feels like a private sanctuary.
For guests who prefer alternative accommodations, there are numerous Airbnb options and boutique hotels nearby, though I highly recommend encouraging your loved ones to stay on-site to fully embrace the destination wedding experience.

The nine luxury suites at Villa Lario Resort are finished with top-quality Italian-made materials, and each suite has its own distinct character and charm. The accommodations are thoughtfully designed with names that pay homage to Lake Como’s most beloved towns—Bellagio, Varenna, Dervio, Mandello, and Oliveto.
Some suites are located in the main villa building, offering elegant interiors with sophisticated wallpaper and marble bathrooms. Others provide unique experiences: the Darsena suites feature private gardens with direct lake access, while the newest additions are nestled within natural caves overlooking the water—an absolutely unforgettable stay for adventurous couples or VIP guests.
For wedding photography purposes, these suites offer incredible getting-ready spaces. The natural light, luxurious details, and lake views create the perfect backdrop for those important pre-ceremony moments. During the October wedding I photographed, the couple utilized multiple suites for their bridal party, and each space photographed beautifully.

What truly sets Villa Lario Resort apart is its variety of stunning event spaces, giving couples flexibility regardless of weather or their vision for the day.
The property’s expansive lawn is the star of the show for outdoor ceremonies. Framed by the dramatic Italian Alps and overlooking Lake Como’s shimmering waters, this space provides a naturally spectacular backdrop that requires minimal decoration. The walkway leading to the ceremony area is lined with lush greenery and perfectly positioned for those emotional processional moments.
The side lawn area offers additional flexibility for cocktail hours or alternative ceremony setups, and it’s one of my favorite spots for couple portraits during golden hour. The way the late afternoon light hits the mountains while reflecting off the lake is simply magical.

Villa Lario Resort offers three distinct reception spaces, each with its own ambiance:
The Lawn: For couples who want an al fresco celebration under the stars, the outdoor lawn can be transformed into an enchanting reception space. String lights, candlelit tables, and the natural beauty of the surroundings create a romantic atmosphere that photographs like a dream.
The Indoor Atrium: This elegant space serves as the perfect backup option for unpredictable weather, but many couples choose it as their primary reception venue. The atrium’s floor-to-ceiling windows frame stunning sunset views over the lake, and the natural light throughout the day is a photographer’s dream. The indoor lighting can vary depending on your uplighting choices, allowing you to customize the ambiance from soft and romantic to vibrant and celebratory.
The Glass Garden Room: This architectural gem offers the best of both worlds—the feeling of being outdoors with the comfort and climate control of an indoor space. Surrounded by the villa’s lush gardens and with views extending to the lake, this space is particularly stunning for intimate dinner receptions.
As a destination wedding photographer, I evaluate venues not just on their beauty, but on their functionality for capturing every important moment of your day. Villa Lario Resort excels in both areas.
The Waterfront: Direct access to Lake Como’s shores is a game-changer. The private dock and waterfront areas offer endless opportunities for romantic couple portraits with that quintessential Italian lake backdrop. The wooden boats available at the property add authentic charm and create some of the most memorable images from the day.

The Side Lawn: This area provides versatility throughout the day. In the morning, it offers soft, diffused light for detail shots. During golden hour, the lawn becomes bathed in that warm, dreamy glow that makes everything look ethereal. The mountain backdrop ensures that every angle is Instagram-worthy.

The Ceremony Space Walkway: The tree-lined path leading to the ceremony area is perfect for capturing processional moments, first looks, and quiet couple portraits. The dappled light filtering through the leaves creates a romantic, storybook atmosphere.
The Atrium: The sunset views from this indoor space are absolutely spectacular. I positioned the couple near the windows during the reception to capture those magical moments when the sky transforms into shades of pink and gold over the lake.
The Private Park: Villa Lario’s 10,000 square meter private park is meticulously maintained and offers hidden pathways, flowering gardens, and quiet corners perfect for intimate portraits. The variety of backdrops within the property means we never felt rushed or limited in our creative options.
One of the most significant advantages of Villa Lario Resort for wedding photography and planning is the exceptional vendor access. Since most couples book the entire venue, treating it as an exclusive hotel space for their guests, vendors have the freedom to arrive early and set up without restrictions.
For the October wedding I photographed, the hair and makeup team arrived on-site in the morning and set up in one of the suites. This meant the bridal party could get ready leisurely, we captured beautiful behind-the-scenes moments, and everyone stayed relaxed and on schedule. No rushing from a nearby salon or hotel—everything flowed seamlessly in one luxurious location.
The resort’s staff is incredibly accommodating and professional. They work closely with wedding planners and photographers to ensure optimal timing, lighting, and logistics throughout the day. Their experience with weddings means they understand the importance of things like ceremony positioning for photos, reception layout for coverage, and timing for key moments.
I photographed this particular wedding in October, and the timing was absolutely perfect. The property is closed during January, February, March, November, and December, so plan your celebration between April and October.
Spring (April-May): Mild temperatures, blooming gardens, and fewer tourists. The surrounding mountains may still have snow-capped peaks, creating dramatic backdrops.
Summer (June-August): Peak season with warm weather perfect for outdoor celebrations. Longer daylight hours give us more time for portraits. Be prepared for warmer temperatures, but the lake breeze provides relief.
Fall (September-October): My personal favorite time for Lake Como weddings. The weather is reliably beautiful, the light is golden and warm, and the tourist crowds have thinned. The October wedding I shot had perfect comfortable temperatures and stunning light quality.
Villa Lario Resort truly shines for:
Elopements: Couples who want the elegance and luxury of a full wedding venue but with just the two of them can book the property for an ultra-exclusive experience.
Micro Weddings (20-50 guests): The intimate scale of the property makes smaller gatherings feel perfectly sized rather than dwarfed by a too-large venue.
Small Weddings (50-100 guests): This is the sweet spot. You’ll have enough guests to create energy and celebration while still being able to book most or all of the suites for your loved ones.
What I loved witnessing at this October wedding was how the venue creates a true destination wedding experience. Guests weren’t just attending a wedding—they were enjoying a luxurious Italian retreat. The ability to host your aperitivo by the pool, have a gorgeous garden ceremony, and transition seamlessly to an elegant reception all within the same stunning property creates a cohesive, relaxed experience.
The property includes modern amenities like a swimming pool, two restaurants (including the gourmet Amandus restaurant and a more casual Grill & Lounge), a private beach area, and even a heliport for couples who want to arrive in ultimate style.

While October in Lake Como is typically beautiful, the indoor options at Villa Lario Resort provide complete peace of mind. The indoor atrium can accommodate your ceremony with floor-to-ceiling windows ensuring you still have those lake and mountain views. The glass garden room offers another elegant backup option.
During the wedding I photographed, we had perfect weather, but I was impressed by how seamlessly any of the indoor spaces could have transformed into ceremony venues if needed. This flexibility is crucial for destination weddings where you’re planning from afar.

In my years photographing destination weddings across Italy, I’ve worked at some of Lake Como’s most prestigious venues. Villa Lario Resort Mandello has quickly earned its place among my absolute favorites—not just for its undeniable beauty, but for the complete experience it offers.
The combination of intimate scale, luxury accommodations, versatile event spaces, stunning natural beauty, and that iconic Lake Como backdrop creates the perfect canvas for telling your love story. There’s enough space for an elegant aperitivo, a breathtaking ceremony, and multiple reception options, all while maintaining that exclusive, personal atmosphere that makes destination weddings so special.
How can you go wrong with those mountainous backdrops, the shimmering lake at your doorstep, and a property that feels entirely yours for the celebration? You simply can’t.
If you’re dreaming of an intimate, luxurious Lake Como wedding that feels both grand and personal, Villa Lario Resort Mandello deserves serious consideration. The venue’s combination of natural beauty, thoughtful design, and exclusive atmosphere creates the perfect setting for couples who want their destination wedding to feel truly special.
